of the future. in some companies, the strategy centers around the computer
where knowledge is carefully broken down, coded, and stored in databases. in
those companies, knowledge is considered a reusable commodity that carries
value in being made accessible to many employees and their clients. this
approach is referred to as the codification strategy. in other companies,
knowledge management centers around the individual through whom knowledge is
passed on a person-to-person basis. in these companies, knowledge is considered
more of a catalyst for problem solving than a solution. and much of its value
is tied to the experiential perspective lent to it by the individual. this is
known as the personalization strategy. both strategies have their strengths.
but if a company is to use knowledge effectively, it can rely on only one.
